Team Women in Mining took part in the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer on September 9, 2017, benefiting The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Princess Margaret) in Toronto. The walk was the culmination of a year of fund-raising and training by the 16-person team. Donations from many individuals and companies helped them raise almost $130,000 this year, surpassing their $110,000 goal. The team finished in the top four of all corporate fundraising teams, and finished #1 in its corporate division (Mining, Energy, Utilities and Transportation)! All team members did the walk, choosing their own distance – 15, 25 or 40 kilometres, through the streets of Toronto. The event raised $6.1 million in 2017.
Over its 15-year history, the Walk has raised $168 million for the Princess Margaret. Team Women in Mining has participated every year since 2007 in this event, and has raised more than $1 million over 11 years! (That means that Women in Mining has raised 0.6% of the total that the event has raised!)
With nearly 1 in 2 Canadians facing a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, it is essential that Princess Margaret prioritizes precision medicine and innovation related to genomics, robotics, and artificial intelligence in the pursuit of improved outcomes for cancer patients. Princess Margaret has made some incredible advances in cancer research and care over the years and this would not be possible without a huge amount of fund-raising from generous donors. The collaborative environment among researchers and clinicians provided at Princess Margaret truly contributes to its success as a top 5 cancer institute in the world.
Leading up to and during the walk on September 9, the team received much media recognition in newspapers and on the internet, television and radio.
