Speaker: Emanuela Heyninck, Pay Equity Commissioner Ontario, Gender Wage Gap Strategy
Topic: Closing the Pay Equity Gap
The gender wage gap continues even as women's labour participation rates and education rates equal or surpass those of men. The gap is caused by many factors and closing it requires many solutions. Pay equity is one means of addressing discriminatory workplace compensation practices but it is not sufficient. Ontario's Gender Wage Gap Strategy Steering Committee is seeking public input to explore ways in which governments, businesses and social partners can work together to close the gap. Emanuela Heyninck is serving her third term as head of Ontario's Pay Equity Commission. The Commission's mandate is to enforce the Pay Equity Act through investigation of complaints and monitoring of employer's compensation practices to redress systemic discrimination in the compensation of female dominated jobs. Emanuela is the immediate Past President of the Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators and has been a long-standing member of the Society serving in various capacities. Before her appointment she was a lawyer in London, Ontario practicing civil, family and administrative law.
